The Power of Hair Color

Not for nothing, but after doing "Ambush Makeover" for more than a couple of years I have only gained more respect for hair color. I am constantly overwhelmed by the power and importance of hair color. I think that hair color is the quickest way to dramatically change your looks. You can look younger, prettier, sexier, completely natural, or incredibly chic and stylized. The true miracle of hair color is that in most cases it takes less than an hour to complete the process. On the Today show's Ambush Makeover I color hair in less than half that time. Hair color truly is the quick fix that works. I am fully aware of that hair color is only one part of "Ambush". I truly believe it is the most significant change that sets the tone for the makeover's cut and style, make-up, and clothes. I know this statement might ruffle a few feathers in the fashion and beauty community, and maybe even with the other members of the "Ambush" team. I am not trying to emphasis my importance or underplay the significance of a great haircut, perfect make-up, and a great looking outfit. I am solely talking about the power of hair color.

I have made many dramatic color changes on young girls over the years. Many times the change was for young actors playing a movie role or an attempt for a real girl to look like her favorite "it" girl of the moment. I think hair color on young girls is fine but I do suggest subtle changes. I always think of hair color as make-up. You and your hair color are most likely beautiful as a teen. Very little needs to be done, you are perfect already. But if you want to have fun and color your hair I only have one comment. Color it! A touch of hair color is no different than trying on a lipstick. It's a fun way to try a different look. It always grows. Now is the perfect time to experiment. By the way, you can also get away with color choices that probably won't work when you are a bit older.

Women start to notice a change in their hair color starting in their 20's. Some incredibly lucky women notice the change in their 30's. The natural nuances of color become less vibrant. The color is a bit dull. A few greys might even start to grow right around the hair line. At this moment many women are starting to think, "Should I start coloring my hair now or should I wait? If I do start to color my hair will I have to do it forever?" The choice is yours. Do you have to color your hair in your 20's? The answer is no. Will it look prettier if you do? The answer is most likely yes. You can give your hair back some of its youthful glow with just a pinch of color. This could mean adding a few highlights, a semi-permanent color to add a shimmer of color, or even a permanent color close to your natural shade to keep your color vibrant. None of these colors require frequent touch-ups. They will all slowly blend away with a minimal line of demarcation. Once you start to color your hair you don't have to do it forever. You only have to color your hair when you feel it looks dull and lifeless.

Hair really starts to change around the age of 35. The few grey hairs you had are now noticeable streaks of grey. Even if you are incredibly lucky and grey is not an issue, your hair no longer has its original luster. The tones that made your hair rich and vibrant are now fading. The texture is often different as the years pass. Curly hair can become straight, silky hair can become frizzy. Many women will start to notice a general thinning of the hair. At this point hair color becomes a necessity. Hair color will prevent your color from looking dull, keep your complexion vibrant by providing contrast with your skin color, plump up the volume of your hair by coating it, and completely cover those annoying greys.

I obviously believe in hair color. There is no other process than can be as easily maintained, at home or at the salon, to keep you looking your best. I stand behind that fact with stronger convictions every year I stand behind my color chair. I never try to persuade anyone to color their hair. I only tell them what hair color can do for them. The choice is yours. Happy coloring!
