Travel Hair Tips from a Weekend Abroad

It's a bit ironic that I find myself on a plane to London on July 4th. After all, it is the day the United States of America declared its independence from England. I'm with my co-workers Leigh Rossini and Natalie Singh. We're crossing the Atlantic to sell our products in the UK. We spend our plane time napping, eating, discussing where we'll be go to dinner in England and even find time to talk about key selling points for products.

We've already determined that I will go back to the hotel after dinner to have an early night's sleep. I have to look good the next day. I'll be on camera and need to look fresh and energetic.

My colleagues have a completely different agenda. They are in the mist of an in-depth conversation about where they'll go after dinner, what they'll wear and, of course, how they will do their hair and makeup. I must admit that their banter holds my attention. I find myself excited about their upcoming evening adventure and happy that I have a genuine excuse to go home early. I know the conversation at breakfast will include stories that will be told, embellished and retold until they become part of salon legend.

Upon landing, we zoom through customs and find ourselves in a taxi headed for our hotel in Knightsbridge. It's already late because of the time change and we are really looking forward to a good dinner. We check into the hotel and agree to meet in the lobby in 15 minutes.

The women look beautiful as they approach the lobby. I immediately notice every one of the quick changes that have transformed them from pretty girls to glamorous women.

Of course they have changed into skimpy summer dresses that they would never wear in the States or at least not with me. I do an instant double take and realize this is just the beginning of their instant makeover. Here are five of their quick glamour fixes.

1) LEIGH'S TIP: Pull your hair up and wear it in high pony tail. Back comb the pony to make it full. Twist in a loop while you are applying your makeup. Undo the twist after you finish your makeup. You'll look like a modern day Bond girl.

2) NATALIE'S TIP:
Girls with curls have more fun. Natalie is from Texas. She was born with a curling iron in one hand and hair spray in the other. Her tip is to take large sections of your hair and do a twist and curl that will give you instant big hair. Give it shape with a delicate double ribbon head band. You'll look great and spend less than five minutes on your hair.

3) THE DIRTIER THE BETTER: Both Leigh and Natalie have great thick hair that seems to look better if it's a little dirty. Women with fine, oily hair can find themselves with their hair sticking to their head. Dry shampoo is a must for woman with fine, oily hair after a long plane ride. It immediately gets rid of the oil-slick look and adds tons of body to your hair. If you don't have dry shampoo, use baby powder. It will do the same thing. Be sure to brush it out of your hair thoroughly so it doesn't look dusty.

4) ACCESSORIZE: I noticed the girls admiring the flower arrangement in the hotel lobby. As I was looking around outside for our driver, I heard the girls giggling. I should have known that something was up. As I turned around to say the car was waiting to take us to the restaurant, I realized Leigh had a red rose at the base of her dark ponytail and Natalie had a white camellia behind her ear that made her red hair even more vibrant. My co-workers had sticky fingers! Whether from your own garden or borrowed from a hotel centerpiece, a simple fresh flower can give your hair instant glamor.

5) TRY A CHIGNON: If you are just having a bad hair night, are totally not handy with your hair or you literally have only five minutes to pull your look together, don't despair. Simply slick your hair back. If it's long enough, there is nothing more chic than a low pony tail. If your hair is shorter, you can simply gel it back. You can never go wrong with a simple classic look.

We are in the car and on our way to the restaurant. I can only think about dinner. It's been a long day. Meanwhile, the girls are counting the minutes until I head back to the hotel. I'll hear about their night in London at breakfast the next morning. I'll tell you about their adventures, or at least those that I can, in next week's blog.
