Fantasy Ambush: McCain, Obama & Palin

Believe it or not, more than a year has passed since we started the "Ambush Makeover" series on TODAY.  I love doing the segment and I am thrilled and grateful that it is so well received. It keeps me in touch with many women I would never have had the chance to meet. I teach these women about the benefits of hair color, haircuts, and makeup. They teach me about life. The old adage about never judging a book by its cover is true. These women may have ignored their looks, but their enthusiasm for life and willingness to better themselves makes them beautiful. I call them my diamonds in the rough. Beauty is much more than having a perfect face with the right haircut or hair color. True beauty comes from living a full life and always being excited about what tomorrow may bring.

People always ask me what I look for in a makeover. I only have one requirement and that is a willingness to change. Almost everyone can improve their appearance with a little fine tuning. All you need to look your best is to keep your mind open to new possibilities.

I must admit that I do have an "Ambush Makeover" fantasy. I would be perusing the crowd on the plaza looking for the perfect makeover. In the middle of the crowd I would see three of the biggest signs, all saying "PICK ME!" As I get closer to the signs, I realize they are being held up by Cindy McCain, Michelle Obama, and Sarah Palin.

Most likely the only part of this fantasy that will come true is that they all will probably wear campaign buttons that say something like "PICK ME." But wouldn't it be the best "Ambush" if they were the makeover candidates? I can picture exactly what I would do to makeover each woman. Before I go into detail, let me issue a disclaimer if any of my beauty advice seems like I am for or against any political candidate. I don't think anyone would be interested in my point of view on that issue. I also must say that all three women look great right now, but as I said before, there's always room for improvement.

HairMcCain.jpgCindy McCain is an attractive 54-year-old woman with a body made for clothes. She obviously loves fashion and always dresses impeccably. I am sure she is being pursued by every top American designer. I wonder why a woman so tuned in to the fashion world could go so wrong with her hair -- the most important fashion accessory. Cindy McCain's hair is much too light. I would love to make her hair a darker blond. There are no nuances of color in her hair; every strand is exactly the same shade of pale blond. This is a most difficult color to wear. If she would add depth of color at the roots, her color would start to look more believable. Her hair color would look softer and complement her complexion. She would look younger and more beautiful. I would also change her hair style. Mrs. McCain simply doesn't have enough hair to sport the tousled post-Farrah Fawcett style she often wears. She has fine hair that begs to be cut in a A-line bob that could be worn down or in a simple chignon. This would be the most flattering style for her face shape and appropriate for the fine texture of her hair.

HairObama.jpgMichelle Obama has a problem that women of color who perm or straighten their hair often share. Once the hair is chemically processed and then styled, it often looks frozen in place. This might be appropriate for her if she were the traditional wife of a political candidate running for president, but she does not fit that mold. She is not just an adoring and silent accessory to Barack Obama. She is very much her own woman. She doesn't wear traditional "first lady" fashions. Why should she wear a "first lady" bouffant? Michelle Obama needs to have her hair styled in a more casual manner. It should look like it could blow in the wind. A tip for Mrs. Obama: Throw away the hair sprays, gels and mousses.

HairPalin.jpgSarah Palin might lose her bid for Vice President, but she definitely wins the award for the most famous hair style of the 2008 presidential campaign. Women now have an excuse to clip their hair in an instant up do and claim to be sporting the "Palin." All kidding aside, hair up and off the face is flattering to many face shapes. Sarah Palin is a very attractive woman. I think she would look prettier and more modern if she wore her hair down. But then she would not look like such a caricature of herself and Tina Fey might be out of a job.

I have three more "Ambush Makeovers" before the election. I cross my fingers that my fantasy makeovers will appear on the plaza of the "Today Show." Mrs. McCain, Mrs. Obama, Mrs. Palin, are you really ready for a change?
