Tie It Up, Tie It Back
It's summer and everyone does it! Tie it back, that is. I am talking about your hair. You know, when you’re trying to get out of the house and you have to be some place in 10 minutes and there are still things to do. It's pony time! Hair tied back can look great or it can look like you are in your sweats doing laundry. You know the look. This "look" is my biggest pet peeve.
No one is exempt from this quick fix temptation and potential fashion "don't." There are no excuses, we are all busy. We all have rubber bands, which lead me to my first tip. TIP - Never use rubber bands that hold newspapers together or come from an office supply store. They will rip your hair out! Guaranteed! Recycle them for desk use only! Elastics made for hair are the best and they are easy to keep on hand. Every woman I know has a favorite elastic that keeps her hair in place for those "not so good" hair days. When that one disappears they usually have a stash of elastics hidden in their make up case. TIP - If you use elastics, be sure to use the right size for your hair. Elastics that are too small will make dents in your hair, or worse, cause breakage. My favorite way to tie back hair is to use the snag proof satin finish elastic. These make it almost impossible to snap your hair. TIP - Move your elastic around. This will, by the way, prevent any extra stress to your hair.
You don't have to show your elastic to the world. Wrap a medium section of hair from the pony around the elastic to cover the band. Hair tied back, worn low at the nape is incredibly simple, chic, and timeless. The key word here is simple. WARNING - Don't pull extra hairs out to make your hair look relaxed. If a few strands of hair fall out of your elastic you look carefree. If you pull the hair out you will look like you're trying too hard.
Girls with curls can tie their hair back by day and let it out at night. Tied back hair looks great and works like a set on curls. Tie hair back in a medium to high pony. Use a gel that doesn't flake (I love my styling foaming gel) to hold curls back, but leave the pony curly. Add a little shine serum on the curls and let hair dry completely. When you take your hair down it will be straight at the root, wavy in the middle, and curly at the ends. Depending on how much you handle your hair, it can either look perfectly coifed or like bedhead hair.
If you have a perfect blow-dry but need your hair back during the day a loose pony is your answer. Find one of your oldest, most stretched out elastics and pull your hair halfway through to create an undone bun. This will create a soft wave and/or bounce in your hair. Buns can also make hair smooth if you start with wet hair and let hair dry completely. WARNING - This can take forever if you have very thick hair.
One last point, bangs and ponies work great together. TIP - Bangs with a medium to high pony will mimic the chicest short hair cuts. This is an easy way to have a new look for a day.
Now tie it up, tie it back. Take one extra minute. Make sure you look great from all angles. You are set to go, and not to the laundry.

When you say "too small" are you talking about the diameter of the elastic or the thickness of the band? I have fine hair and typically use the skinny bands, but the diameter is big enough to fit around my wrist comfortably. Is this ok or should I be using thicker elastics?
this is a bit random, but i was wondering if you have long hair would you recomment the v-cut or just a normal layered hairstyle?
Justine,
Both the diameter and thickness of the band are important. If the diameter is too small it will make dents in your hair and eventually cause breakage. If the band is too thin it will snag your hair and might cause breakage if you are repeatedly taking it off and on. Bigger is usually better.
Good Luck,
Louis
Leana,
Long layers are usually more flattering and give haircuts more versatility. Ask your stylist what he or she thinks would be right for you, your hair texture and your face shape.
Good luck with your cut,
Louis
I have hair roughly chinlength that I don't really like (got it cut a little too short)... it's very thick and doesn't like ponytails, though i do for convenience's sake and to get it out of my face. Bobby pins are pretty useless (sounds crazy, but there's something about my hair that just doesn't take to ponytail holders, clips, and bobby pins).... is there a reasonably priced product you recommend that could help because I would dearly love to do the ponytail without it all falling out! :) Thanks. :)
Tracie,
Sounds like your hair is so thick that it has a mind of itâs own. The way around your fallout problem is to start with wet hair. Use a pinch of gel to help hold your hair back and secure with an elastic. This should hold the most stubborn hair in place.

During long flights, I used to put my long, loosely curled hair in a two inch wide soft velvet scrunchy, pony tail first, and then wrap the remainder of my hair around the scrunchy and tuck it in. Just prior to arrival, I would take my hair down and it always looked great. Do you have any other travel tips? I love your blog and your great advice! You are the "King of Great Hair"?
I usually take my long, semi-damp hair and wind it into three loose buns(one on top, and two on the bottom- next to each other) while I put my make up on. Once I have my make up on, get dressed and eat breakfast I run the blow dryer over it until its dry (if I have time I let it dry naturally but that's a rarity) When I take the buns out I have long lovely curls. I shake them out and spray upside down and lightly spray right side up. I rarely have a bad hair day. Hope this helps someone.

Hi...just came upon your blog while searching for "up-do's" for the Marine Corps Ball. I am an active duty Marine and I have shoulder length, fine hair. I've always had beautiful hair, even though it was pretty fine. I am wearing it back now in a "sock bun" (easy and fast to do to get hair up when you don't have a lot of time) but I'm worried that I might be putting too much stress on my hair by putting gels and sprays on and pulling it back tightly 5 days a week. Any suggestions would be helpful!
Thanks!
Jenna
i have dirty blonde hair/highlights but i want to go darker. how should i do it without it costing too much?
Roy,
Always great to hear the good thing.
Thanks,
Louis
Kayla,
To prevent frizz apply gel to your hair and let it dry completely, then fluff with fingers. If you try to fluff when your hair is damp frizz will occur.
Louis
Kayla,
Side swept bangs sometimes called "peek a boo bangs" are incredibly sexy.
Louis
Denise,
Great tip!
Thanks for the comment.
Louis
Kristi,
Great tip.
Thanks for sharing with all of us.
Louis
Maya,
Curly hair is almost always dry hair. To add moisture I suggest using a leave in conditioner. Remember, conditioners work from shampoo to shampoo. Your conditioning routine must be maintained.
