Plane Hair

Here I am, sitting on a plane again with Leigh, "the woman behind the man". This time we are off to London to sell my hair care products. I am playing with my new iPhone, having fun with the camera, taking pictures of Leigh. Looking at the pictures made me realize how hard it is to look good on a long plane ride. Sorry, Leigh! I am just using you as an example. It happens to all of us. Looking good on a long plane ride, and more important when you get off, is a tough thing to do. Flying robs everyone of looking fresh and vital. I decided I should go to the pros, the flight attendants, to find out the inside skinny.

One of the flight attendants, a woman named Grace, recognized me from the Today Show and started to ask me questions about her hair. Little did she know I was going to turn the tables on her. I told her how great she looked and asked her how she avoided plane hair. Here is what she had to say.

“Louis, looking good on the plane is almost impossible! The plane seems to make your hair dirty, flat, and dull. It’s just not pretty. I never use hair products when I am working. Gels mousses, styling crèmes might work on the ground, but they make your hair look like you haven't washed your hair in a week up here.”

Grace was right. The main problem of airplane hair is the dirty feel of your hair after a long trip. I started thinking of other ways to stay fresh on a plane. Here is what I came up with:

1) Brush it and leave it alone. I know that you don't change the style of your hair on a plane but don't touch it at all. I don't think women are aware of how much they play with their hair. Touching your hair will make it dirty faster.

2) Ponies work! Long-hair girls can put their hair back in a loose ponytail. This keeps your hair up and off your face, and will look amazingly fresh when you take it down upon landing.

3) Hats can protect you from more than the sun. A loose fitting hat, something that won't give you "hat hair", will act like a barrier to keep your hair fresh.

4) Plane time is the perfect time to sport a twist or a braid. They always look good, on the plane and after you land, and usually look better when hair is a bit dirty.

5) Go to the restroom just before the "fasten seat belts, we are preparing to land" announcement. This is the perfect time to make yourself "land ready". This is when you fluff or brush your hair. Women with fine or oily hair should keep a pinch of baby powder in their bags. Brush it through your hair and it will absorb oils and give your hair a bit of extra body.

Have a safe flight. Don't forget what Grace said about using styling products on airplanes.

Happy and pretty landings!

I have to say I totally agree with the braids idea. Maybe it's just me, but when I shower at night I'll put my hair into 2 french braids (parted over to the side, I usually wear my hair). And in the morning when I take them out I have beautifully perfect waves. I love it...I get all kinds of compliments on my hair and it only takes me a minute in the morning to take the braids out! People think I have taken the time to curl my hair. It's great!

Call me crazy, but it works for me.

I don't know how long you are in London but I hope you're enjoying my city (I live here). The women are quite into fashion, but in a different way from the States (where I'm originally from). I bet they'd love you advice and products!

And as someone who just got back from a trip to the US - it's tough to deal with flight hair. Luckily mine is medium length and sorta curly, so I can just fluff and go for the most part...or put it up when I arrive...or just spritz it with a touch of water to revive my hair. Curly is better just a touch 'dirty'!

Louis,
First of all, I love you and love watching you on the today show. My question is ... how do you get the terrible airplane out of your hair without washing it?? Thanks for always having so much wonderful information!!!!

your biggest fan

So glad that you've addressed this! Usually for long flights, I dread to touch my hair or apply anything on it and I would just bun it up so that I don't have to witness the dryness and the dullness condition. LOL.

I like the baby powder tip!

Are you kidding me? As soon as I get off the plane, I jump into a shower and get the "air plane cooties" off! That includes washing my hair!

Ever since our family started doing this, no one has come down with a cold from sitting and breathing air plane air!

Worry more about sickness than shiny hair!
Thanks
