Wedding Hair
I was on the red-eye coming back from the wedding of my LA salon manager, Robbe, with my publicist, "the woman behind the man", Leigh. We were talking about my next blog. What should I talk about? Father's Day is coming up, but I should wait until it's a little closer. Summer hair? Maybe, but not yet. This banter went back and forth until Leigh turned off my night light and told me to sleep or she would get off the plane mid-flight.
Then, in the middle of one of my toss and turns, it hit me! Duh! You just went to a wedding. June is here! Everyone gets married now. It's time to talk about wedding hair.
Robbe, the manager of the LA salon, never looked more beautiful than she did on her wedding day. She looked happy and looked like she was enjoying every moment of her wedding. Most important of all she looked like Robbe. TIP - Be sure to look like yourself on your wedding day.
Your wedding day is your day to be a star. This is the day you want to look your most beautiful. Don't expect this just to happen because you are in love. It doesn't work that way. You must make a beauty program starting at least three months before the wedding. This is the time to start thinking about the way you want your hair to look on your wedding day.
Before you make a final decision you must choose your dress. Your hair and dress must work together. Up-do's look great with backless dresses, half up-do's with soft curls for ball gowns, and waves that look like they were always there for beach or garden weddings.
Once you have decided on a dress it's time to book an appointment with a hairdresser. Notice I said a hairdresser, not your hairdresser. If your hairdresser is a great hair cutter but doesn't do well with a more polished look that is appropriate for weddings, you must do your homework to find the right person to do your hair. Many times there are hairdressers that specialize in weddings. TIP - Make an appointment for a tress rehearsal. Bring pictures of your gown and bring your veil.
Talk to your hair person. Let them know your vision. TIP - Try a few hair styles and photograph them. This will let you look at them later if you are overwhelmed at the salon and also document the final style for your wedding. Remember: it's three months from the big day. Showing the hairdresser a photo of the tress rehearsal will avoid any last minute surprises.
Once you decide on your hairstylist and hairdo book you wedding day appointment. Do not think you can book the appointment a week in advance. Check this off your to-do list and breathe.
Now it's time to talk about your wedding hair color. TIP - There should be no major hair color changes before your wedding. Now is not the time to try out a new color. Wait until you are back from your honeymoon. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't be fine-tuning your color. This is the time to slightly brighten your shade to help give you that wedding glow. Add more gold to blond hair, more chocolate to brown hair, and more copper to red hair. Book your color appointment two weeks before your wedding. The last two weeks before the wedding will fly by. You will be happy your color is done and off your check list. TIP - If you highlight your hair, be sure to have a full head of highlights for your wedding. This way there will be no two toned surprises, no matter how you style your hair or how the wind blows.
Speaking of blowing hair, be sure to bring a hair emergency kit with you. It should have pins and spray and whatever else you need, if you start to droop. You probably won't need it, but you will feel better knowing it's there. By the way, don't forget a makeup repair kit. I mean, it is a highly emotional day. Who knows who might tear with joy?
Plan your beauty routine and leave nothing to chance. Make your appointments in advance and the only thing you have to do on your wedding day is have fun and enjoy every moment.
Don't forget the confetti!

Hello,
I need some tips on how to keep my hair from turning brassy. I have drk brown hair and have it highlighted. I would like a slight red tone with chocolate brown. Can you suggest any overcounter shades to choose from. Thanks
Great topic! Just in time. Iâm getting married next month but my hair really looks OK now. Every time I ask my friends if I need a haircut they all say NOT YET. But I really think that I do especially that the end portion of my hair looks frizzy and dry. However, Iâm thinking about my hairstyle. What if Iâll just leave my hair as is now so the hairdresser can style it better on my wedding day? My hair is kind of limp. Some portion of it is curly. The end â which is my most hated part â really looks dry.
ukyankee,
You look beautiful on your wedding day.
congratulations,
Louis
Thanks!
Wendy,
Use a medium ash brown color. Because you are lightening or lifting your hair color some warm tones will occur. The ash pigment should neutralize any excessive brassiness.
Good luck,
Louis
Portrait from photo,
A small trim for your hair is probably a good idea. If you don't want to get a trim don't worry about your dry frizzy ends. I am sure your stylist can make your hair look healthy and shiny with your wedding blow dry.
Congratulations,
Louis
Dear Louis,
I'm really enjoying reading your blog; thank you for all the tips! I'm thinking of venturing into colour- having not coloured my hair since some very dodgy experiments a few years ago as a teen with Sun-in. With my black/very dark brown hair it looked awful! As my hair is curly and I'm always blowdrying I've avoided colour, and I don't want to stray too far from my natural colour as it really wouldn't flatter my light olive skin and very dark brown eyes. However, I'd like to add a bit of interest with a few highlights around the front/top - but I'm not sure what shade to get. Plum, burgundy, chocolate?
With home kits, I know the shade tends to be darker than on the packet so should I go a shade up from the one desired? I noted in an earlier post you said that warm tones don't flatter olive skin, so which way should I go to energise skintone that can look sallow? PS getting married...year or two away... so starting to grow it now!
Thanks!
smellymel,
Light warm tones can make your light olive skin appear sallow. A dark chocolate glaze or highlights will make you hair color and skin color more vibrant and alive. Start to color you hair now so it will be perfect for you wedding.
Good luck,
louis
