Trend alert!

Trend alert! Fashionistas take notice! There's a new trend coming that will have a major influence on how you look this year. Hair is going short....and incredibly chic. You heard it here first.

When hair goes short, you do know what else will happen: hair color and lots of it! Color will be bolder than we have seen it in years. Get ready for a quick change in the way we look and think about short hair cuts and styles.

I know you are thinking, "How does he know this?" The answer is easy, it's in the stars. Ellen Barkin's short hair received better reviews than her "there is life after Ronald Perelman” film, Ocean’s 13. Katie Holmes’ new haircut is garnering more press than Tom's couch jumps did on Oprah. More people are aware of Victoria Beckham's new coif than hubby David's US migration.

Color continues to make news too with Barkin’s change from golden-blond to Academy Award night "movie star blond" post Ocean’s 13. Victoria Beckham's long brunette locks became highlighted with her first cut and is now an asymmetric pixie cut in a "no doubt about it" Hollywood blond. By the way, Victoria’s bff Katie Holmes was still a brunette at the time this blog was posted.

Other recent short-hair star sightings have included a very blond pixie on Michelle Williams, almost black and then almost platinum boy-cut on Selma Blair, Rihanna's bold angled bob, and a bevy of pyt’s on the catwalks in a range of colors not quite found in nature's palette.

What does this mean for you? Should you cut your hair short? Should you throw caution to the wind and become your fantasy color? Let's figure this out.

If you have fun with updos and down-dos, with coils and curls, with full hair and flat hair, and wear more than two of these styles in one day, keep your hair long. If you have fine hair that requires you to use styling products, a nuclear-powered hairdryer, and still feel the need to pray for a good hair day, you should definitely consider a short cut. The cut should suit your face shape, bone structure, and not be boring. TIP - Bangs, angles, and layers are key. Remember you want a short, chic, and sexy cut. The style should show off your cheek bones or give you the illusion of a perfectly shaped face. WARNING - Short hair must have an interesting focal point or you might look like you drive a minivan (I can say this, I drive a minivan.) This is not allowed!

Hair color should definitely be stronger on cropped cuts. TIP - Over-the top-blonds and raven-haired women should be in their twenties. Thirty-something ladies experimenting with these hues could be pushing a good thing. Those in their forties should remember there is nothing worst than mutton trying to look like lamb. Color will instantly give short hair a fashion edge, and make most short cuts prettier. The added bonus of color on short hair is that roots look good. It looks like a fashion statement and not, "I know, I know! I need to do my color".

You are going to become aware of many short hair icons this year. They will make you take note and look twice. Short hair could be the perfect style for you. You could become the next Audrey Hepburn. Are you ready to make the cut?

Celise,
You sound like the perfect candidate for a short hair cut. The bigget tip I can give you to keep your hair "hot" is to give the focal point of the hair cut flair. This mean long bangs, long layers, or feathering in key areas of your cut. Make sure your new cut compliments your face shape.
Good Luck,
louis

I got my hair cut a couple of months ago because I thought my hair was getting to0 long. I didn't want short hair, I just wanted medium lenghth. My hair stylist got the wrong idea and cut it too short but I loved it. It was so cute. My hair was kind of like Nicole Richie's bob. Now I have to grow it back out sadly because I'm a gymnast in training. The blogs are awesome!

Thanks Louis! Great to hear that short hair is coming back!

Louis...I have a question about short hair cuts. I have very thick hair and am currently letting it grow so that i can donate it to Locks of Love as my Dad died from malignant melanoma. Anyway, whenever, I have gotten my hair cut short I have never liked it. It was too "bushy" stuck out and looked awful (at least I thought so). What are your suggestions for someone who has thick hair and is in need of a change. I have had the same style for over 15 years. I can't believe it's been that long!

Thanks!

I'm glad to hear that short hair is comming back in for women. long hair has become so mundane. I think it's time for a change.

I hope more women are encouraged to go short.

Louis,

Love the blog as ever. I was wondering something about my hair. When I was younger (even in my 20s), I had fine but thick & quite curly hair (ringlets). Now, as the grays are quite strong (probably over 50%) in my late 30s and I continue to dye it, I've notice that the curl is 'leaving'...that I'm becoming more wavy. Is this what I ought to expect? A change in how my hair works as the grey continues on? I don't mind, as I've been able to go a bit shorter and have more fun with teh waves versus curl (used to get tighter as it got shorter but no longer), but it was unexpected!

Alex,
The great thing about growing out a short haircut is that you get to experiment with different hairstyles as it grows.
Have fun with your new do's,
Louis

Ukyankee,
You are experiencing a very common issue with all women who are in the greying process. Grey hair changes the texture of your hair. It is much coarser and can be wiry. It's easy to color but you'll have to develop a different set of styling skills to make your new hair work for you. This is a great time to rethink your hairstyle/cut.
Don't panic and have fun,
Louis

Damn. I've been working so hard to grow my hair out too! I've always had short hair, and growing it long has been quite a struggle for me. Everytime I tried before I would see a cute short cut and be like "screw it I'm chopping mine off." But, I think I'm going to try and resist the urge this time. It's taken too long to get it this way. And I do love the long hair too. But... Short hair is easier...and SO CUTE! We'll see how this goes....

Louis Licari said:

Jess,
You grew it this long, play it out for a while. Long hair is hot too! Give it 6 months if you get frustrated there is nothing better than a new cut for the New Year.

I enjoyed your blog about how short hair is back in style. I have a lot of hair and had it cut short a few months ago, I finally found a great stylist who will be putting low lights and hilights next Saturday, she told me that the cut will really pop! I have been a 1-color blonde for years, so this will be exciting!!
Thanks for the tips for women over 40 and what styles to avoid!

I cut if off!I went short after years of having Farrah hair :} Im 43 and everyone says I look about 25 now. but..I want to color and am not sure what to do. I have medium skin color light brown hair that has lots of natural highlights but now,has lots of grays sprouting. I hate to give up my natural looking hair and get a "I colored my hair" look. Louis,
I have a round face and told by a hairstylist that I can't have short hair b/c I'd look like a chipmunk! Can people w/ round faces have Victoria Beckham hair? I love her hair and would love to look like my age (26). I currently have a bob that comes to my chin but can't find a stylist that will cut it any other way. Do they not know how...do I need to find someone that costs more than $40?!?! HELP!
much love,
ash

I'm over 50 and have highlighted my hair for yrs. Quite light. Now it seems that being light makes me look so washed out. I'm very fair skinned with very pale eyebrows and lashes. My natural colour is light to medium brown. Any suggestions appreciated.

Louis,
I found this article by browsing hilight ideas for short hair. I just chopped mine off at the age of 50. Great to hear it's in vogue. My question is...I wanted to hilight just the top for gray coverage and a natural look. But, my stylist brought the hilights into a more all over look. Did I go from trendy to frumpy? Thanks!

I'm terrified to cut my hair. It's mid thickness and down to my bra strap. I love the different do's I can do but I must admit, I often wonder what it would be like to have short hair and how easy the up keep would be.
Hmmmm..... I guess you never know. I'm a pretty spontaneous person.
Thanks for the info!

Just stumbled on this. I had super short hair years ago - loved it but got bored with it. For the past 1.5 years I have been trying to grow it out -=-= but it is very thick and wavy and I hate the in-between stages. Now I am trying again - I have somewhat oval shape face from the front - but long from the sides. Used to think long in the front, short in the back would be good - but only when I use a straight iron.. When it dries natuarrly wow do I look bad! What cut is good for me? (PS getting married in May 08 - so I think long gives me more options?)

Hello from Syracuse NY!!
I have a question about coloring my hair. I do it myself (I'm 37 and less than 50% gray) and use Loreal products normally. I am a brunette- dark brown. Around the 4th week after I have colored it, it lightens up so much that I hate it but don't want to color yet again. Any tips? Should I try a different brand? Thanks! LOVE the blog.

Dear Louis, I am 45 and have had have salt (silver - white)and pepper hair, a 1"(wide)white streak in my bangs (left temple). I stopped coloring my hair & this is what was underneath. My hair is thick. The "salty" ones are courser than the "pepper" ones. I keep my hair very short - over the ears, spikey on top with a little longer bang. I want a new cut so I let it grow out some this summer (top is now 3"; rest is 1.5"). I would like to keep it short, edgy, sexy, and a little feminine. Even though I am 45 years old I don't feel 45 and don't look it. I exercise several days a week to stay in shape and take care of my skin. I have thought about coloring again, but I don't want the hassle of the upkeep. I constantly have complete strangers (all ages)that walk up to me & compliment me on my color and want to know "who does my hair and the name of the color I use". Would you please recommend an appropriate cut (maybe even attach a photo). Your help will be deeply appreciated. Thank You!

OK, OK, we all get the 20 year olds, but what about us 60 year olds that still want to look fun and hip. I don't want to look like I drive a mini-van!

I'm 64 yrs young. My hair was a 'boy cut' for about 18 years. I'd get bored with it, and try to let it grow. I'd ask my stylist, "What do you think?" and He'd say, "I say cut it off. It's your signature haircut. Not very many woman can wear their hair that way!" So I'd cut it off. I have salt and pepper hair. More salt that pepper, very white and silvery. It must be attractive very short (I mean extreme, very short) because strangers ask me who cuts it, who dyes (?) it! My stylist says he gets more clients from me than anyone in his career. Anyway, I've let it grow over the past year. (Had to stay away from my stylist for a while.) I went back when it was below my chin. I asked him again, and this time he replied, "Congratulations for getting thru the bad stages! Looks great!" He cut it into a short bob. It's thick, course and big waves, when longer. Much harder to manage. Hot iron has broken some. Now you say short's back in style. Extreme short? Was not easy to grow, struggle with cutting it off. Help!!
