Father's Day Makeovers
I was running in New York's Central Park with my trainer Mike Gostigian. He is a super athlete. In fact, his close friends call him superman. I was watching his form, his breathing, and his sense of ease while running at a high intensity. Mike looked perfect (except for the fact he desperately needed a haircut and shave). I had a mission. I had to teach Mike about grooming the way he taught me about running. I was confident I would discover movie-star good looks underneath his "Grizzly Adams" facade. Father's Day would provide the perfect excuse for a makeover. I could hear my self saying, "Mike, your wife and kids will love it"!
Looking at Mike closer I realized his face was lost underneath his bushy hair and beard. Mike's biggest hair problem was the reverse of most men. He had too much course wavy hair. It overwhelmed his face and almost always looked like he stuck his finger in an electric socket. It was time to tame the mane down. TIP- Men whose hair grows big instead of long should keep their hair close to their head.
Don't fight your hair's texture. Get the right hair cut. Thick bushy hair should be cut under the wave so it stays manageable. Remember, most guys use their fingers as combs so hair most always falls easily into place. Men love to use hair products. They keep their hair looking good all day with little or no effort. By the way, men's grooming products make a great Fathers Day present. Almost all men use some sort of molding creme or foaming gel to hold their thick hair down or make their fine hair look fuller.
Mike introduced me to one of his clients whom he thought might use some help. Haig is a great-looking man in his 40's with very white hair. It could be outstanding but it was so white it just made him stand out. The hair almost had a neon white glow. It had to be toned down. TIP- tone down grey hair, don't go for complete coverage. It will look obviously colored. Guys can color their hair and do all the time, but it should never look colored. Men should always avoid dramatic hair-color changes. The easiest way to blend the grey hair away without looking like Elvis is to leave the hair color on your hair for five minutes instead of the suggested thirty minutes. This will mute the greys and avoid any tell tale grow-out lines. You can always add more hair-color for an extra few minutes if your hair needs to be darker. TIP- always get a new haircut when you color your hair for the first time. You will receive tons of compliments on your cut and no one will notice your new color.
My third makeover is Phil. Phil is one of the all-time great guys who work behind the scenes at the Today Show. He looked good but with a little fine tuning I knew he could look great. Phil is starting to go a little grey. Phil is also starting to experience a change in the texture of his hair. The hair on top of his head is slightly finer than the thick hair on the sides of his head. This is almost a universal problem for most men over 35. The solution is simple. Before every haircut Phil should shampoo in color for five minutes to blend away his grey hair. TIP - to keep thinning hair looking full the thicker hair on the sides of the head should be cut close . This will give the illusion of fuller hair on top of the head.
A cut and color for guys should take no longer than 45 minutes. Be sure to use a grooming product to look good all day long. TIP - keep your grooming quick and easy so you keep it up.
Watch my Father's Day makeovers on the Today Show Tuesday, June 12 and meet Mike, Haig and Phil.
Happy Fathers Day!

Your TODAY show presentation was amazing. While we aren't exposed to too many male "makeovers" these three were dramatic and yet extremely natural looking. For several years I have wanted to find a cut that better matched my age and at the same time improve hair color (I have never colored my hair) to better reflect skin tone and age. As I do not live in a large metropolitan market, I wouldn't have the first clue where to find a salon with knowledge and talent to treat men's needs...surely it's not the "girl" around the corner who has cut my hair for 20 years, or she would have responded to my previous requests to make adjustments based on my age. Where would one find a list of qualified people to successfully replicate the truly outstanding work featured on the TODAY show this morning? BTW, I hope you will upload the video to YouTube so I can one day SHOW a stylist what I'm looking for!
JD Watt,
Thanks for your suggestion of uploading the Today Show segments to YouTube. I think it's a great idea. Please e-mail my assistant Lotte (lotte@louislicari.com)with your location and we will try to help you find the best person in your area.

DEar Louis,
My husband sounds like Haig. he is salt and pepper in back, and white in front. what color hair dye should we try to 5 minutes...he doesn't really have any "brown" left at all.WE'd like more grey. Thank you.
