Haircuts for Moms

I was at work in the New York salon running from client to client. iVillage noticed I was scheduled to appear on The Today Show the next day doing mother's day make-overs. They e-mailed me asking for a mother’s day blog by that night. It didn't happen. I worked my butt off coloring hair all day, made Val Kilmer grey for his new movie Columbus Day, and did four makeovers for The Today Show. This put me home at around 10:00pm. I missed a cocktail party for Eileen Ford and the birthday of my dear friend Faith Popcorn. I felt like a total loser and a horrible friend.

I laid out a suit for The Today Show, and sat at my computer in an attempt to write some tips for moms on mother's day. This stuff usually comes gushing out but there was nothing. My brain was fried. I went to bed. I had an early wake-up and I wanted to look good for my appearance on The Today Show.

I woke up in a total fog but after my first cup of coffee my mind was working again. I ran out of the door to catch a taxi. Sitting in the the car I was writing last minute notes for the show. Staring out the window I noticed a mom jogging down the street with her baby. She looked great and had the happiest look on her face. It was 6:00 a.m. in the morning.

Talk about a reality check! One: moms rule! Two: moms want to look hot! I mean really, why else would she be running at 6:00 a.m.? Three: I should get over myself! I am not the only one with a busy schedule. Today's mothers don't want to look like moms. They want an easy beauty regime that keeps them looking sexy, stylish, and maybe even single. Your hair says more about you then anything else. Make sure your hair is saying the right thing about you!

The traditional mom's haircut is very short and no-nonsense-looking or long and perpetually tied back. This is a "no go" if you ever want to be noticed or admired by anyone other than your kids. I think the theory is kids will want to play with your hair if it's down or falling into your eyes. Guess what? So will your husbands and boyfriends. A great haircut and good color are essential for mothers. It will keep you looking like you, not someone's mom. It will also help to reduce your "get ready time" and you will always look together even when you're not.

Moms should always keep their hair care simple, but never play it safe. Haircuts should have a definite shape. Hair with a good shape is always flattering whether it's styled or not. Layers are important because they make even the most difficult hair easy to style. They give hair texture and movement. I have always said that hair color is the makeup that does not wash off. This is more important than ever for moms because most of the time they don't have time to put makeup on! This is the perfect time to rethink your color. Hair color should be a bit brighter; it will keep you looking fresh even when you're not.

The new Hollywood moms have set the bar high for all moms. Kate Hudson’s long blond layers, Sarah Jessica Parker's honey brown curls, Jennifer Garner's chocolate brown tresses and Marcia Cross's bright red mane are the new beauty standard for moms. I know they have more help with their kids than most of you could dream of and they do have a team of beauty experts to get them ready but you can still learn from them. Think of it this way: they did all the research; you just have to copy the techniques that work for you.

Take a minute to look in the mirror every day. Who is staring back at you? Is it you or someone's mom?

You know what to do!

I have a big question.

Can hair mousse be left in your hair overnight if say you came home late and totally burnt out?

Wonderful article! I am a 37 year old mom and business owner that has just lost approximately 35 lbs. and am still losing. I want a complete makeover in the worst way, but am not sure where to go to have one.
I have long, layered, dark brown hair, but have colored it so many times. Right now, it's red, dark brown, and grey! This is not me!! I am in desperate need of a good colorist, and live on Long Island. I was going to call your salon, and try to schedule an appointment with you, and then I found this site. I will still call, and hopefully, you can help me. As a mom of three, with two businesses, I don't have much time. Thanks for this wonderful site and all your information!

Kayley,
Shampoo your hair as needed. Don't worry about the mousse it won't do a thing.

Where can I find a photo online of your Mom's Makeovers? The last makeover you showed on the Mother's Day program looked like the kind of thing I could manage, but I can't find a photo to take to my hairdresser. Thanks!

I would love to have a real pro do a hair makeover for me. Every "change" I get always winds up looking the same. I live in a small town in Mississippi and to find a good stylist is like finding a needle in a haystack.

Karla,
A great haircut and some easy to use styling products should give you the wash and wear hair that you are looking for.
Good luck,
Louis

Mary,
I am sorry to say that there are no photos of the Today Show mothers day makeovers. All 3 haircuts were heavily layered which always makes styling easier. The feature haircut was a shabob which was a very layered bob haircut.
I hope this helps,
Louis

Your article about moms absolutely hits the mark! I just wish that you had some photos of cuts and styles to help us. I am in search of that look you described. I have lost over 60 pounds and need that "finishing touch". I will definitey take your advice about the layers and going a bit brighter. Thanks!

I enjoyed reading your article on mothers hairstyles and comments from readers. I am a 49 yr. old "mom" and look like a "mom". I am currently trying to loose the remainder of the 60 lbs.I started working on a yr. ago.I have a round face, fine dark hair and actually used to look pretty "hot" yrs. ago. My teenage daughter likes to show her friends my "old pictures" and is proud of what I used to look like .After 27 yrs. of marriage and too many extra lbs. also, battling depression and menapause. I really need a lift in the hair department. I worked as a secretrary and receptionist for 12+ yrs. and have been a stay at home mom for an unreal 17 yrs. I need to get back into the work force, my youngest child is 16yrs. and is pushing me out the door. I need a lift and something sophisticated yet stylish. I would like to look nice for my childs school activities and sports events, can you help me?

Help! I refuse to age gracefully but I hate to admit that at 60, I'm seeing my oval face starting to look square because of those nasty "jowls". Please, what would be a good hair shape for me? My hair is fine but use permanent color which does add some body..especially when it's fresh from the salon.

I am a new mom and I have long partly blonde hair with my darker roots in serious need of color. You say to put layers in, but I thought that would add more time styling in the morning. Time is a premium with a 4 month old. How do I decrease my hair prep time in the morning and still look great for Fall 2007? Please Help!!!

im a 38 year old mother , who oddly enough wants more of a mom look. I guess i am just recently coming to grips that i am pushing 40 and embracing all that beauty of my brillance and wisdom of my years. last year i had a blonde mohawk, and today it's short, casual, beige blonde, a little curious. im creating my 'look ', my "vibe". the question i am posing is...Getting ready is the last thing I enjoy doing. Don't get me wrong I am a girlie girl with lots of make up and glitter, but not that in to putting forth effort in looking well put together. ANy inspiration for me Louis?
